PUSHING PAINT

Forty miles return.

Back home from the town of Inverness.
To buy his daughter a Christmas dress.

Two days off from down in the pit.
One day to glide and sit.

The little sleigh was a perfect fit.
The little mare would not quit.

The mine was black the snow was white.

Coal provided the heat and light.
And christmas for a rural night.

The house and barn were a Christmas card.
The oil lamps shone across the yard.

With the horse well fed and in the stable.
The gifts for Christmas on the kitchen table.

There was still some time to enjoy the blessed fable.
