WEIGHT OF SNOW

I watched the birches shake off the snow

Old women with long white hair
Held in place by the frosty air

They fell asleep last night straight and tall
Not knowing the weight of snow would make them crawl

Dare I say
Snow doesn't bend them down to stay

Ice storms do that.

A few small shakes will loosen the weight
And once again they will be tall and straight

We do not wish to climb that tree
With such a trick we stay home free
